The Edges – Community Garden

Purpose:

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God.”—Leviticus 19:9-10 NRSV

The youth at WCN have a heart for others. They have a heart for serving. Most importantly, they have a heart for God. The youth have built a garden out of this love for God. This scripture has been the basis of their desire to grow the garden. At the edge of our property is a garden that our youth have planted. They dig the holes, plant, water, and weed the garden. The produce that comes from the garden is taken to the local food pantry so that those who are struggling the most in our community have access to fresh food.

Many people believe that youth will grow up to make a difference in the world one day. Our youth are making a difference in the world right now and are leading other businesses and individuals in our community to partner with them. The youth have not planted the garden to bring attention to themselves but as a signpost to point the way to how our God makes everything right and new and this can happen through those who love God and have a willing, obedient heart.

Time Commitment:

If you are a teen or an adult and want to help in this ministry, the youth meet on Sunday nights and Wednesday nights in the Spring and Summer to care for the garden. The youth also take turns watering the garden during the week.
